American Institute of Architects and Tokyo Planning Forum Present:
Learning from Dharavi: The Informal City
Friday May 30, 7-8.30 PM at
Temple University Japan, Room TBA
Often branded as the largest slum in Asia, Dharavi in Mumbai in fact represents an advanced form of post-industrial urbanity. Far from being the hopeless settlement, it is a strong community of hard working entrepreneurs, optimism, with a very low carbon footprint.
Geeta Mehta (Temple Univ Japan Campus) & Matias Echanove (University of Tokyo) will introduce Dharavi in the larger context of Mumbai and worldwide issues of environmental sustainability and urban development. They will also discuss their ongoing work with the Urbanology Institute and the Urban Typhoon Workshop held March 2008 in Dharavi (www.urbantyphoon.com).
This has been registered for 2 CES learning credits, please sign your name at the lecture reception.
