SUMMARY:
Shin-ichi Tanabe, Professor at the Department of Architecture, Waseda University will address issues on carbon neutrality in the field of architecture from a global perspective. In Japan, 91% of greenhouse gasses are CO2, and 85% of it originates from energy use. Issues around energy efficiency, demand side management, renewable energy, and embodied carbon will be discussed.

In the latter half of the lecture, James Scott Brew, a member of AIA Japan and the Continuing Education System committee will join the crosstalk. After James briefly addresses his perspective on issues in response to Professor Tanabe`s lecture, they will explore together, with audience participation, what architects and architectural engineers can do for the future society.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After attending this program, attendees will be able to:

1. Identify at least three (3) current global issues on carbon neutrality.
2. Explain what is required in the architecture field to resolve the carbon neutral issues.
3. Describe three (3) important strategies for the resolutions focusing on Japan.
