Join us on Friday, August 2nd, at 19:00 for Mitsuhiro Kanada’s lecture titled, “Socially Sustainable Way of Building: Natural Material as Catalyst for Community Engagement.” This lecture will be online and in-person at the Manas Trading Showroom in Nakameguro. For those joining use in person, we will prepare light snacks and drinks afterwards. This is a great opportunity to meet the speaker, browse the showroom, and socialize with other Tokyo architects, engineers and design professionals. Lecture Topic:
The lecture will begin with a general introduction of the role of structure in architectural design today. Through recent example projects, different ways of collaboration between an architect and an engineer will be presented. Building materials impact environmental sustainability. Natural materials can also encourage social sustainability of buildings. The scale of this impact is not only to the building occupants but also the local community. The lecture will show projected and actual impacts of built projects. Also, new and traditional natural material examples will be introduced through experimental projects.

Lecturer Bio:
Born in Tokyo in 1970.  Mits Kanada has studied architectural design and structural engineering at University of California at Berkeley.  After graduating from UC Berkeley with Master of Science, he has joined Arup, a global engineering consultancy based in 37 countries with more than 90 offices.  Based in Tokyo and London, he has been involved in challenging projects such as Maison Hermes by Renzo Piano and Taichung Metropolitan Opera House by Toyo Ito.  Since 2007 he has been teaching at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he researches the possibilities of modern interpretation of traditional Japanese materials and technology.   He is a member of Arup Foresight + Innovation network, responsible for strategic future forecasting consulting through innovation.
