LECTURE DESCRIPTION:

The Design for Freedom movement is raising awareness about the pervasiveness of forced and child labor in the building material supply chain. The built environment continues to be heavily reliant on forced labor. We will explore the risks of this humanitarian crisis and highlight ways you can take action towards transparency. Learn about the tools and resources available to use in advocating for a more humane future.

The lecture will be followed by a short discussion between Sharon Prince, and SANAA founder and architect of the Grace Farms building Kazuyo Sejima.

「Design for Freedom」運動は、建築資材のサプライチェーンにおける強制労働や児童労働の蔓延をテーマとして啓発を行ってきました。依然として、建築業界は強制労働に大きく依存し続けています。この人道的危機のリスクを探り、透明性の確保に向けて行動を起こす方法を紹介いたします。そして、より人道的な未来を提唱するために活用できるツールやリソースについても共有いたします。

講演の後、シャロン・プリンスとグレース・ファームズ を設計したSANAAの建築家による短いディスカッションを行います。

本講演は英語で行われ、日本語通訳がつきます。

LECTURER BIO:

Sharon Prince is the CEO and Founder of Grace Farms Foundation, a new kind of boundary-defying public space that advances good locally and globally. Prince commissioned Pritzker Prize-winning SANAA architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa to design Grace Farms, which has become widely known as a global humanitarian and cultural center located in New Canaan, Connecticut.

Grace Farms is the platform for the Foundation and its interdisciplinary humanitarian mission to pursue peace through nature, arts, justice, community, faith, and Design for Freedom, a global new movement to eliminate forced labor from the building materials supply chain.

After recognizing a void in addressing exploitation in the building materials supply chain in late 2017, Prince launched Design for Freedom in 2020 with a first-of-its-kind publication, a nearly 100-page Report that provides analysis and data on how forced labor is embedded into the very foundations of our buildings. At the inaugural Design for Freedom Summit in 2022, Grace Farms also released the Design for Freedom Toolkit, a practical resource professionals use to implement ethical sourcing strategies into their practices. Design for Freedom Pilot Projects on three continents, including a new long-term exhibit at Grace Farms, With Every Fiber, are demonstrating that building more humanely is possible.

シャロン・プリンスはグレース・ファームズ財団の創設者兼CEO。グレース・ファームズは、地域そして世界における発展を志向した、境界なき新たな公共空間です。財団の拠点であり、自然、芸術、正義、コミュニティ、信仰、そして、建築資材のサプライチェーンから強制労働をなくすための世界的な新しい運動である「Design for Freedom」を通して平和を追求する、この学際的な人道的使命のためのプラットフォームでもあります。

2017年末に建築資材のサプライチェーンにおける搾取への取り組みが全くなされていないことを認識したプリンスは、2020年に「Design for Freedom」を立ち上げ、いかに私たちの周りの建築物が、強制労働の上に成り立っているかを示すデータとその分析をまとめた、これまでにない全く新しい報告書を発行しました。そして2022年の第1回「自由のためのデザイン・サミット」において、グレース・ファームズは「Design for Freedomツールキット」を発表しました。このツールキットは、専門家が倫理的な資材調達の戦略を実践するために役立つ実践的なリソースです。グレース・ファームズでの新しい長期展示「With Every Fiber」を含む3大陸での「Design for Freedomパイロット・プロジェクト」は、建築がより人道的になり得ることを示しています。
