SUMMARY:
As the urgency to address climate change and halt greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) continues to grow, designers have a responsibility to make smart design decisions to minimize their buildings’ GHG emissions. The steps to designing a carbon-smart building are two-fold: minimize embodied carbon and bring operational carbon to zero. This session will look at the holistic carbon profile of the built environment and the cutting-edge tools and processes that design teams can use to design carbon out of their projects.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Ar. Junko Nakagawa (Atelier Ten New York / Associate Director)
As an Associate Director at Atelier Ten and an experienced sustainable design consultant and architect, Junko possesses a strong interest in collaborative work with architects and design clients on high-performance building projects and masterplans. Her diverse range of experience includes past work on academic buildings, cultural and institutional structures, performing arts centers, high-rise commercial buildings, and master planning projects, with a particular focus on international projects.
Junko received her Master of Architecture degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After attending this program, participants will be able to:
- Understand the relationship between embodied and operational GHG emissions, and the design process for reducing each.
- Incorporate the process for smart embodied carbon design by understanding critical project milestones, types of analysis, and key stakeholders involved at each stage.
- Understand the necessity of using hourly GHG emissions data vs a single annual value in predicting GHG emissions and reductions.
- Apply the methodologies and processes for reducing embodied and operational GHG emissions to their own design work and/or energy analysis practice.
